The Upcoming New Moon on Friday Jan 27 at 4:07 pm PST at 8º15’ AQ initiates the Chinese New Year of the Yin Fire Rooster which starts on the following day, Jan 28.

In BC, with strong Chinese communities, we have quite an awareness of Chinese Astrology and year cycles.
Did you know? Victoria has the oldest Chinatown in Canada! The BIG parade however will be in Vancouver on Jan 28 – no wonder, given the large Chinese population.

Here in Victoria where the Chinese population is about 30 000, the Chinese New Year will be celebrated again in Chinatown on Sunday, Jan 29 – always on the Sunday after the CNY – with traditional Lion’s Dance and fun performances.

Introduction to the Chinese Animal and Element Cycles

The Chinese calendar is Lunar based (as in Islamic, Mayan, Native American cultures), and therefore the New Year varies every year. It traditionally starts with the day following the second New Moon after Winter Solstice.

Yes, there is also a Chinese Astrology based on the planetary movements in relation to the star constellations of the Zodiac, like our Western Astrology system.

The more popular system is based on two interlocking ‘wheels’ of cycles:

The cycle of the 12 Animals = 12 earthly branches. These are in sequence: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.

The cycle of the 5 Elements = 5 heavenly stems: Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, and Wood.

Therefore, there are 60 possible Animal & Element combinations, and they repeat every 60 years. The Elements stay ‘on’ for 2 years, with alternating Yang and Yin polarity.

For instance, after a Yang Fire Monkey year (Feb 8, 2016 – Jan 27, 2017) the comes the Yin Fire Rooster year from Jan 28, 2017 to Feb 15, 2018.

The Chinese cycles aren’t directly based on planetary cycles or related to star constellations. But the 12-year animal cycle corresponds roughly with the 12-year JUPITER transit cycle. So, when you have your JUPITER Return you also have the Return of your Chinese year animal. Makes sense?

The last Yang Fire Rooster year was Jan 30, 1957 – Feb 17, 1958.

When you are about 60 years old, you get your Chinese element / animal return (together with the Western Astrology 2nd SATURN and 5th JUPITER return). And if you have grandchildren 60 years younger than you, you share your Animal / Element combo with them.

The last Rooster years (with different Element combinations) were (Jan / Feb that year until Jan / Feb following year) 1933-4, 1945-6, 1957-8, 1969-70, 1981-2, 1993-4, 2005-6.

Find specific dates, and more detailed intro to the Chinese Elements and Animal Cycles here.

For the Rooster years, check out this table:

Start date End date Heavenly branch
26 January 1933 13 February 1934 Water Rooster
13 February 1945 1 February 1946 Wood Rooster
31 January 1957 17 February 1958 Fire Rooster
17 February 1969 5 February 1970 Earth Rooster
5 February 1981 24 January 1982 Metal Rooster
23 January 1993 9 February 1994 Water Rooster
9 February 2005 28 January 2006 Wood Rooster
28 January 2017 15 February 2018 Fire Rooster
13 February 2029 2 February 2030 Earth Rooster
1 February 2041 21 January 2042 Metal Rooster

The cycles have more combinations than just the yearly ones –
The so-called 4 pillars:

  • The Animal / Elements of the Year (which would in Western Astrology roughly compare with the sign JUPITER was in at the year of birth), a.k.a. the ‘outer animal’.
  • The Animal / Element of the Month of birth (which would roughly compare with the 12 Zodiac SUN sign cycle), a.k.a. ‘inner animal’.
  • The Animal / Element of the Day of the week (which would roughly compare with the MOON sign), a.k.a. ‘private animal’.
  • The Animal / Element of the Hour of birth, with a 2-hour range per animal, and rotating with elements (roughly comparable with AC signs), a.k.a. ‘secret animal’ – only people who know your birth time would know it.

So, in fact, the system is much more differentiated and complex in its combination variables than at first glance at the ‘Year of the…’ only.

12 x 5 Year combinations, 12 x 5 Month combinations, 12 x 5 Day combinations, and 12 x 5 Hour combinations (total 12960000) are possible!

The Yin Fire Rooster, and its Year – feat.: Monkey Review

The Element Fire / Li continues for another year before Earth will be on.
Fire is the Element of the South, passion and creativity, adventure, leadership, the colour red, Summer, and relates to the planet MARS.

Whoa – we already had a big dose of Fire in the passing Monkey year – no kidding, esp. in the American political / electoral arena. Check out this image again that I posted a year ago, for the Fire Monkey article. Had to share it with you with the original text too – for review. End of this p. 4, and p. 5.
Any associations with who won the Elections and wreaks havoc now? He’s got his PLUTO, MARS and AC in LEO… hmmm, freakishly fitting, here we go:

Monkey Golden Headed Lion Tamarin

Golden-Headed Lion Tamarin And yay, the Chinese Monkey relates to the Western sign Leo! 🙂

“No boredom, in the Yang FIRE MONKEY Year…

The Fire Monkey is super active and the most assertive (ruled by planet MARS…) if not aggressive of all Monkeys.
He’s naturally competitive, likes to be dominant, and take on leadership.

Hmmm, wondering what this means for the U.S. Federal Elections in Nov….

He heads straight for the top, and likes to be in control. Sorta Alpha Ape. When he’s in charge of a situation, he’s very motivated to nurture his tribe. Naturally adventurous, this Monkey leaps, sometimes recklessly, into new situations.

It’s a good idea for this one (and in this year) to channel all the fiery energy into creativity and into attracting with bold charisma and cheeky charm. Others can (often need to) help this Monkey get out of trouble.

The Monkey is clever, forever curious, a mischievous prankster, and always playful. He makes fun, plays tricks, has always a joke up his sleeve, and shows us that life is a game. The smart Monkeys love watching (and imitating) people, learning, playing, and being creative.

Clearly, this Monkey is super-fast and clever, so watch out for tricks and too good to be true schemes!

Good thing SATURN is presently in SAG (until Winter Solstice 2017) which helps us not to believe everything we (seem to) see, and to examine our moves.

I’d also recommend to watch the MERCURY retro phases under the Fire Monkey, since of course, MERCURY rules the ‘Monkey Mind’.

You know what I mean… So, that’ll be: April 28 – May 22, Aug 30 – Sept 21, 2016 and Dec 19 – Jan 8, 2017.
What’s up with MARS, the ruling planet of Fire, in this Monkey Year? Well, something quite significant:
MARS will go retrograde (every 2 years) from April 17 until June 29, 2016, and cross the ‘Phoenix Point’ from SCO to SAG 3 times:
March 5 – Mars direct / forward from Earth perspective, from SCO to SAG.

May 27 – Mars retro from Earth perspective, crossing from SAG to SCO.

Aug 2 – Mars direct from Earth perspective, crossing from SCO to SAG.

MARS will be for a long time in SCO and SAG this year – since Jan 3 until Sept 27 – during which time we’ll experience all 4 Eclipses (March 8 & 23, Sept 1 & 16).

A lot gets burnt off and transformed in this fiery year… already started, have you noticed? Best to work with it, maybe shed layers of old ‘skin’, conditionings, expired, limiting, fear and separation based beliefs (SATURN in SAG), and offer it all to the purging fires of transformation.

May old (self) destructive aggressive tendencies be transformed into passion, enthusiasm, creative spark, with the MARS retro phase!”

Wow, reading this Fire Monkey Chinese, and Western brief preview from last year, I was amazed at how much of it has come to pass.

So, what now? Coming out of a fiery, aggressive and mischievous year with crazy retro energies that showed us how we can get tricked, incl. by our own mind, confused and deluded (Eclipses with SN, CHIRON, and NEPTUNE in PISCES)… here we are – what a Monkey mess, you may say?!

Yin Fire Rooster – Phoenix Bird Coming in!

Did you know that Fire in the 5 Chinese Elements is also associated with the Vermillion Bird / Phoenix? A double whammy…?!

phoenix-fire

The Phoenix out of the Ashes process continues:

Burning off what we aren’t anymore, or fooled by, will be a big theme this year.
LILITH (our natural, undefined Self) goes over the ‘Phoenix Point’ in the Zodiac (from SCO to SAG) on Feb 13, so shortly after the Chinese New Year.

Ego busting times, for the Rooster, and through the Phoenix.

So, what’s the FIRE ROOSTER about, ‘usually’, and in this year’s context?

Rooster likes to show off, and is everything but shy.

“Show your colours!” is also a theme for the Lunar NORTH NODE going into LEO end of Apr. 2017 for 1½ years. Just to clarify: That goes for all of us, not just for an ‘elite’. And “Take a stand for what is close to your Heart!” says SATURN in SAG. It’s not about right or wrong. It’s about Living Life Lovingly.

Rooster’s shadow is Ego bolstering – “Look at ME!”, and creating a ‘Harem’ / following of admirers. As it usually goes, a lot of that drawing of attention can be an over compensation for inner sensitivity, insecurity, and being easily hurt by criticism.

The Fire Rooster can be even more flamboyant, aggressive (cock fight style), know-it-all, and dramatic.

I’m not saying every person born in the Fire Rooster year (1957 – 58) has these streaks to this degree – wouldn’t be my style, and wouldn’t make sense to generalize in that way. Also: as mentioned, the Chinese system has its 4 pillars (see above) that modify the characteristics.

But let’s be particularly aware of these traits in ourselves and in the world ‘outside’ in the year to come, and meet them with what they are really about.

  • Why are we / are people seeking attention?
  • What is it that we really need to show to others?

Once again, as in the Fire Monkey Year, let’s channel the Fire rather than into divisive aggressiveness into passion and creativity from the inside-out!

And show our true colours, as we transform and burn off what we have never been.
A purifying Fire from which we grow wings!

On another level, the Yin PHOENIX / FIRE ROOSTER has an association with the Western sign VIRGO. It is transformational, and excellent for health regeneration, as well as clearing on all levels.
The Lunar North Node is also still in VIRGO until end of April – what a perfect time to take care of business, and get our affairs in order.
Now, that’s good news, and good medicine, after the LEO associated MONKEY, and for the peacock like show-off qualities of the ROOSTER. Show us your transformation, PHOENIX!

And hey, what’s with JUPITER, the 12-year cycle planet, in the Rooster year?

JUPITER is presently (since Sept 9, 2016) in LIBRA, until Oct 10, 2017 when it enters SCORPIO.
Themes of fairness, justice, right relationship, choices in general, balance, and peace are BIG this year. Doesn’t mean: “It’s all good”, rather blown up and magnified, so that real growth or growing out of certain situations can happen. Once JUPITER is in SCO from the Fall on, big change will be under way.
Two major aspects from JUPITER in LIBRA will occur (3 times each) this year:

  • JUPITER opposes URANUS in ARIES (# 1 was on Dec 26, 2016), on March 3 (#2), and on Sept 27, 2017 (# 3).
What brings us balance and peace, and what’s unsettling and upsetting? Where do we need to get off the fence and be proactive? When is negotiation and ‘being nice’ enough, and it’s time to assert?!
  • JUPITER will square PLUTO in CAP (# 1 was Nov 24, 2016), on March 30 (# 2), and on Aug 4, 2017 (# 3).
Our choices, and the relationships we engage in have a powerful effect on the world we live in. How can we help turn things around for the better, and for positive growth?

Presently, and for the entry into the Chinese New Year, JUPITER is stationary and will go retro on Feb 5 (until June 9). An important time to re-view our choices and ‘what’s a good match’, what creates synergy, or (in square with PLUTO in CAP), what’s just too much work and too much we’ve taken on? A time to scale back, and find inner fulfillment (VENUS will be retro too).
With JUPITER in LIBRA, there’s lots of incentive and reward for creating harmony and balance in our lives. PLUTO in CAP loves resourcefulness – digging and purging, re-using and re-purposing what we already have.
Goes with the Feng Shui principles of organizing and streamlining our environment – makes life simpler and easier.

In our East-West CNY / AQ New Moon / Feng S9hui workshop on Jan 29, besides the Astrology we’ll also address basic Feng Shui principles, and you’ll receive a paper with lots of helpful tips.

With JUPITER in LIBRA:
How can harmony, peace, balance, culture, arts, aesthetics, fairness, and right relationship be enhanced in your life? Where is growth possible?
Of course, the personal astrological dynamics colour and modify the experience.

And we can all benefit from the important factor of awareness, so that we don’t unconsciously identify with the energies, however wisely travel with their currents.

Happy New Year of the FIRE ROOSTER!
